New wash day routines & product introduction..

Hey all, my wash day routine hadn't felt like a nourishing time for my hair since I bc'd. So I came to the realization that my hair is no longer in the state it was when I began this journey, not when I bought these products and certainly not when I transitioned for 18months. So its time to re-evaluate my staple products and my routines so that I can see the results that I am looking for.

So, let's talk products... After I bc'ed, I began looking for all natural products because I am officially all natural. I kept hearing about Trader Joes having great all natural shampoos and conditioners and they are well respected and used in the NHC, so I wanted to try them...(product review coming soon). So here is the list of products that I am using currently.

Shampoo: Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo by Trader Joes
Condish: Balanced Moisturizing Nourish Spa by Trader Joes
Leave in condish: Olive Miracle by African Pride (found @ Walmart) **newest product**
Scalp: Olive oil formula Gro Therapy by Palmer (found @ Target)
SN: Because I am a recovering PJ, all of these items were introduced over time. I did not buy all new products and throw everything out in one day. My shampoo and condish I have been using for over a month, my grease I have been using sing I was transitioning but my leave in is very new...again, look for product reviews on all these items very soon.

Now, let's talk routines...
New routine: pre-poo...yes, pre-poo. Usually I detangle prior to washing my hair or wash, deep condish and style. But I washed my hair and rocked a wash-n-go for a couple days and ky hair felt crunchy and if you don't know, crunchy is not a good thing! So after watching YouTube vids on how to do it, I decided to pre-poo my hair, with an old staple product...Cantu Shea Butter leave in condish...(recycling products...I will also do a new product review on my new way of using it...)

Here is what I did:
I section my hair into 4 sections. For each section I finger detangled GENTLY, applied EVOO to mail the ends (my crunchiest area (is that even a word LOL) using the "folding hands method". Then I applied the Cantu condish, lightly detangled my hair - mostly the ends, applied a bit more Cantu to my ends and twisted that section. When all 4 sections we done, I wore a plastic cap on my head for 2 hours. I let my hair down and washed and. conditioned as usual. To style I used my Olive Miracle to twist my hair...stay tuned for pictures.

The Challenge has officially begun...

In my last post I issued a challenge to not only myself but to my readers as well to join me in the Curly Chic Challenge where for the next 3 months we will co-wash, curl and care food out curly hair. So here is some background information...

In the weeks that I have been 100% Au'Naturale, I have worn only a selected few hair styles which were wash n gos, buns, and twistouts. When I was transitioning, I feel like I was taking more risks with hair dos and was always changing it up...well now that I have bc'd, I feel that I am being very "safe" with my hair do selections. So I wouls like to challenge myself and others that may be feeling the same way as I do to think and create hair dos that force you outside of the box... So here is what I did... my expected routine for this challenge changed a bit so I will explain what I did and why it is important for my natural hair that I do this...

Shampooed: with an organic Tea Tree shampoo. This cleans my hair and scalp, I mean realllllly cleans it without stripping away the essential oils that are needed by my hair. It stops my scalp from itching and the minty smell is very invigorating...I love it! However, for this challenge I am shampooing every 3 wash days...I will Co-wash on the other 2 wash days.

Co-wash: with an organic moisture rich condish. My hair gets really dry so cowashing is the best thing for my hair...

Deep condish: with Pantene Relaxed and Natural condish. The same reason, my hair dries out on me and my natural curl pattern doesn't seem as excited to curl anymore and that's when I know I need to deep condish. Now for this challenge I will deep condish every other wash day. I am not sure how often I will need a wash day but when it comes I will deep condish. Also before I wash out the deep conditioner, I will apply a palm full of regular conditioner to help reactive the conditioner that has been sitting on my hair and scalp for hours.

Detangle with deep condish in my hair: with my wide tooth comb and then twist hair into 10-15 twist before rinsing conditioner out. This makes it easier to Detangle and prevents my hair from getting tangled during the rinse cycle.

Apply a leave in conditioner: I use Cantu Shea butter. It helps with styling and frizz.

Lock in moisture with oil: I use EVOO. It shines and softens my hair.

Remoisturize my ends: I use Root Stimulators Coconut Oil...only because I could not find the organic coconut oil. This shines and smoothes out the ends of my hair but it is very heavy so I always go light when using this product.

So now you have the information you need to get started. Today is the first day of my challenge and I did not do a length check...dang it! I have already styled my hair (look for pics soon). Make sure you leave comments and let me know if you are joining.

Be Happy to Be CURLY!

Progressing

Hi everyone,
It's been a while since I posted about the things I am working on creatively...so let's do it...

My hair is always a "work in progress" however currently I straightened it and realized it is either:
1. Time for me to get my ends clipped OR
2. It's time for a hair cut into a style OR BOTH...

So after 2 days of unhappy straight-Ness I went back to curly...But my hair is getting longer and is healthier as well. But after watching some of my favorite YouTubers, I decided to do a challenge...on my hair...
This will not be like my failed 30 days of blogging challenge. But this will be a fun, experimental based challenge that I am calling My Curly Chic Challenge...

This will be a hair do challenge that will challenge me as a DIY hair Stylist, will chart hair growth by Tue week and it will attempt to make my tresses manageable and long lasting...

I skipped my last scheduled length check because I didn't feel like doing it. But I will certainly do one at the beginning of this challenge.

It is my hope that others will join me in my Curly Chic Challenge or My CCC. The 3 C's will also stand for what I will do to my hair during this Curly Chic Challenge and that is Co-wash, Curl and Care for my curls especially at night...

So Here is the routine...in my mind...
I will start with Shampooed hair i am expecting to co-wash 2 times before shampooing again.
I will co -wash, Detangle and style in a curly fashion trying out different curly hair styles.
I will also care for my curls at night using different ways as well.

I am not sure how often I will need to wash and style my hair but just know that for the first time of the challenge I will shampoo and co-wash.
So, good luck to me, and any of you trying my CCC

Rx for Brown Skin Review

Up one night watching info-mercials I came across RX for Brown Skin.
I had heard about it before but was pretty skeptical however, I checked it out and it was pretty expensive! So, I never pursued it.

Then I heard more about it prior to the info-mercial, but the the info in the info-mecial baited me in and I ordered it!.

What's included:

1. Intensive Exfoliating Serum-It says it will revitalize dull skin, improve skins texture, gently exfoliate dead skin for brighter tone and boost skin cell turnover for enhanced renewal.
2. Advanced Botanical Brightner-helps brighten skin discoloration and skin tone, powerfully hydrates and promotes radiance and reduces hyperpigmentation and uneven texture
3. Age Block-Protects skin and enhance a youthful look, hydrates and nourishes skin with a lightweight formula

I have to say, I love this stuff! My skin looks very fresh, the texture is very smooth, much smoother than it was before and I LOVE the Serum! LOVE IT! Howver, I am concerned about the price after the trial offer. The trial is $25 (including the shipping and handling. However after the trial the price changes to $50 per month for a 2 month supply...$50 a month is alot! But the question is, is it worth it to you? Everyone's economic states are in different places right now and I am still deciding if I will contiue after the trial, but I have to say, the condition that my skin is in is certainly playing a huge part!

Have you tried RX for Brown Skin? Also, Would you pay $50 a month for the items described?

OMG...I BC!

It's true! I BC!!!
After 18 months of transitioning I couldn't take it aanymore!!
So, on Friday night, Scissors in hand, I decided that enough was enough and so...I chopped!
Here are some pics thoughout my journey that lead to my BC:
Mini Chop @ 14 Months (June)

Plus Curl Pattern Check:
-As you can see lots of permed ends and only a little natural curls

On National Afro Day (4th of July)+ new georgeous hair color @15 months

16 months and pressed out (August)-Sisters Wedding

17 Months Bantu Knots minus plucking it out equals curly Que's(September)

18 Months Big Chop
OMG...

My first 100% Natural hair do and the feeling of excitement!

Thanks for sharing my journey!

My cross to bear or theirs???

Since I BC I have received different reactions. To me, the most shocking reaction is that of my family! Now, I've read many blogs about people reacting to natural hair positively and negatively and it seems that in most cases the negative response comes from the family...

Well the same is for my family...well some of my family. My mom doesn't seem to know how to react. During my transition she voiced her opinion about my hairdos-positive and otherwise...but the day before I BC I asked her if she would cut my permed ends off. She of course said no because she didn't want to mess it up and I respected that and I did it myself. So the next day when I arrived with my freshly BC'ed tresses, she just smiled as I beamed about how great it looked and felt...

Other reactions are my co-workers who notice the versatility and how great it looks and how confident I look as well. So my question is: Is their negative reactions or opinion my cross to bear or theirs?

PS... My wash-N-go after work...GEORGEOUS!

6 Days of fantastic, soft, fluffy hair

Want to know the secret??? Sealing in the moisture...
Here's what you will need:
Shampoo, conditioner/deep condish, wide tooth comb, olive oil or oil of your choice and styling agent -either curl pudding, shea butter etc...I use Cantu Shea Butter leave in cream.

I achieved this amazing hair with a twist n curl, but this can work on braid or twist outs as well.

Here's what to do:
1. Wash then condish or co-wash the way you regularly would. Every one says "be gentle to your hair" but your hair is being trained, train it to be strong! That's my motto anyway.

2.Detangle with wide tooth comb and optional detangler-I use Mane and Tale detangling spray.

3. Deep condish if you choose too -recommended

4. Apply olive oil lightly-rub on hands and apply root to ends. Be very light on the oil otherwise your hair could feel greasy and weighed down.

5. Allow hair to air dry approx. 50-60%.

6. Style as usual- I part hair for twist outs applying my Cantu before twisting.

Lastly place a roller or perm rod at the end if you choose too.

7. Allow to dry completely and voila!

This will give you soft, supple, curl defined hair with volume depending on your twist size. Enjoy!

Share how you have achieved fantastic hair.
Also I would love to hear if anyone tried and succeded or failed this tutorial.

Love, peace and hair grease y'all!

A first for this Naturalista...tripped me out!

Today I experience a first... Today I received my first "stranger hands in my hair" experience...I wasn't sure how to react but I felt very accomplished as a Naturalista!!! What is it with people??? Do they think it's ok to put their hands in your hair? I equate this act equal to putting hands in my face! Am I over reacting? Or is this such a horrendous act that warrants such a reaction? Tell me about your first "strangers hand in your hair" experience and your reaction to this!

Electric Straightening Comb use and review...

For my sisters wedding I straightened my hair for the first time in a long time. I did it once myself with my flat iron to check my length. My sisters wedding was the second time and this will make the third time in 16 months since I began my transition that I have rocked straight hair.

I thought my Natural Hair Stylist would use the straightening comb or hot comb to do my hair for my sisters wedding, instead she used a mini "super" flat iron that had everything laying down in its place. That brings me to today. Here's what I did:

Wash Routine:
I co-washed, let air dry until it was about 50% dry, sealed in the moisture with olive oil, detangled and braided. It dried completely overnight and I woke up the next morning ready to rock straight hair. Sn: My hair felt wonderful. This was my first time sealing in moisture (but that's another post for another time!)

My Intentions
It was an errand and shopping day for me so I wanted hair straightened for a side-swept ponytail. Not to go out or look professionally done but definitely nice.

Straightening:
I read the directions and it said DO NOT USE WHILE PLUGED UP! That's pretty much it so I was ready to use it.
I parted my hair in what I thought were small sections but my hair was too thick. So I had to part it again. When putting the comb through your hair, you have to check to see if its too hot by placing it on a napkin or papertowel to see if it scorches it, if not it is safe to put in your hair...it to two to three rounds of scorched napkins to get the estimated time it should he plunged in, also to learn to hold the comb correctly. So all in all it took me about 45 minutes to straighten as much as I did.

I didn't spend much time really straightening my hair because I didn't want it "bone straight" just semi...

My review:
I liked the way my hair came out. Once straightened it felt very soft, manageable and it didn't feel scorched or smell burned. So I liked the hot comb method...ok...but a flat iron or curling iron would have did that and more in terms of styling. Just my opinion.

Marriage...the experience...

2 weddings, in 3 months...
We can all say it together..."WOW!"

I had the experience of being a "blushing bride" on May 21, 2011 when I married the handsome love of my life...

Then I experienced being a Matron of Honor for my sisters wedding 3 months later...when she married her partner in crime for life.

During this time I have discovered that I love weddings! I don't want to be in anymore but seeing them, planning them! It warms my heart to think of all of the possibilities that I and my sister as brides faced during that period of time right before you walk down the aisle. It is a special time and I am happy to have experienced it.

I love that my sister and I shared both of these weddings together, her being there for me and me being there for her! The sentiments of that will always be with us and I believe that we will always be thankful that we had one another to calm each other down, to give our very honest opinions to and to encourage one another when the planning didn't go as planned! So this is to my big SIS, I say thank you for being my ace in the hole at my wedding and for allowing me to be yours...I love u and congratulations!

The beauty of natural

I think that things in their natural state are just...beautiful!

It has been very encouraging to me to see other women, Black women returning to their roots. Whether because its the latest "trend" or because they are mixing things up or because they are trying something new...It's happening, they are doing it and that makes. me.proud.

People try to minimize the Natural Hair Movement(NHM) by calling it a "trend", but here is what I think...for many years it was wrong to look or be different from the majority therefore we have perms and plastic surgery which transforms us into something that we would like to look or be like. But that's not the way God made us...

But now, we are breaking away from the streamlined view of what beauty is or should look like and we are going back to our natural state...the way that God made us... It is my belief that people see it, they like it and they want to try it- hence the movement...and that's ok with me...

It takes hard work, courage and strength to stand tall and boldly in a world of people who view beauty onesided and say "My name is Tomika Robertson and I am Au'Naturale"!

Go ahead...you cans do it!

Here is a clear view of my curl pattern:

30 day blog challenge

I'm going in!

30 days, a blog entry a day...

Let's see what subjects I will blog about...

Check out my first post below and come back daily for more...

I am excited!

Lessons learned on my journey to Au Naturale

16 months post relaxers to the day...this has been a journey! A journey that I have enjoyed overall.
(Mini rant coming {please accept my apologies} in 3...2...1)
Yes I said overall! Some days have been a challenge for me while others haven't! Some styling methods, mechanisms and styles have been great for me but some haven't. But I will repeat myself...this journey to au-Naturale I have enjoyed...overall...

You wouldn't believe me if I revealed to you how I stalk the Natural Hair Community(NHC) and some people keep it real when speaking about their journey, their styling and their likes and dislikes about their natural hair. But some people will flat out lie to you and say "just try it you will love it" which you will but they give the impression you won't have any bad hair days -and that is NOT true!
So here is what I have learned on my transition to au-Naturale hair journey:
1. There are so many products to use on transitioning or natural hair that you have to choose what works for you...my advice, don't be a PJ (product junkie) like me. Talk to other naturals and see what works for them, try it and stick to it or research for yourself!

2. Natural ladies don't mind you walking up on them in grocery stores or department stores asking about their hair regimen. I met a nice woman by the name of Tamala by doing so...

3. Natural hair products can get expensive but sometimes the results are worth it!

4. When transitioning, it takes a while to get to know the two hair types that come with transitioning but as soon as you do, things get drastically better.

5. I don't have to be gentle to my hair...my hair responds to my heavy hand better than a gentle touch.

6. You don't have to do or try everything you read in the NHC...

7. Transitioning is not for everyone neither is natural hair. So people can't deal with the commitment, the probing about why you went natural or the sometimes uncomfortable feeling you get when others are checking you out in a good or bad way...and it will happen.

8. Everyone will not like your natural or transitioning hair. Especially your friends and family. Those that are close enough to you to voice their opinion to your face...
8b. It's ok to tell them to keep their negative opinions to themselves.

9. Accessories can be your best hair friend

10. Trying different styles, products and accessories can be fun.

What have you learned about yourself or your hair on your natural hair journey? What advice would you give to newly naturals?
Love, peace and hair grease my peeps!

A new product...(to me!)

Ok, ok.. I know what you are saying. The last thing that any of us in the Natural Hair Community need is a new product. Well, think its worth it!

In the beginning yes I will admit it, (The first step to overcoming a problem is to recognize there is a problem...help me!)I was a PJ...:-( Yes, a product junkie...but I am NOT like that anymore. Basically I tried out a few different items because someone said it dis good for their natural or transitioning hair (hundreds!) But I found what works for my hair and that's what I stick too, usually.. but now that it is doing well I was feeling adventurous same dyed my hair...check out the picture below.

But in the boxed dye that I applied was a gift. The conditioner that they gave. O!M!G!! It has my take feeling wonderful!
What is this great product you ask???
Pantene's Relaxed & Natural...
Great detangler, moisturised, soft, shiny, and very vibrant. Check out pictures below.

Summer hair routine...

Wash day is always a day with a full work load. Right now, here is what I do from start to finish...
A. Dry Detangle
I start with detangling my hair dry by 1. separating my hair into 4 or 6 sections. This depends on how tangled it truly is.
2. Being as gentle as possible comb through each section, if the sections are too big separate them again.
3. Once it is detangled (meaning your comb or denman style brush goes through it without any kinks or knots.) Put some conditioner on it from scalp to ends...fully saturate with conditioner.(use the cheap condish for extra slip and maximum moisture.)
4. Twist to keep the section together and out of the way and repeat.
5. When all sections are complete, place a plastic cap on and prepare for your shower.
Explanation: Because I've tried detangling while wet and was practically ripping my hair out at the root I've learned that my hair is stronger and healthier as well as easier to handle dry. Try it! Also I wash my hair in the shower.
B. Washing & re-conditioning
After 10 minutes of your plastic baggy, wash half of your hair left side then right side with shampoo. Be gentle but not too gentle. Rinse thoroughly and apply thicker condish (I.e.protein condish, strengthening condish rec.) Move on with shower routine...
Before leaving the shower rinse condish out and wrap in a towel.
C. Stretching
(Please note if stretching is not what you want to do skip this section and move to the next entitled Styling.)
Stretching is for curly girlies who suffer from shrinkage. The options to stretch your hair are:
1. Roller set 2. Blow out 3. Or you could stretch after styling.
1. I loooove the roller set. After washing and conditioning, apply your fav leave-in conditioner if you will be sitting under the dryer, apply a heat protectant or you may choose to air dry...roll you hair (it doesn't have to be neat) and let dry. Then unroll and style as you please.
Explanation: I usually do dry twist or braids.

2. Blowing out has its own set of results. After washing and conditioning apply a heat protectant along with your fav leave-in condish. Blow dry with the hand held blow dryer concentrating on the roots but NOT the ends. Explanation: you will be blow drying you natural hair which can withstand that direct heat from the blow dryer. This will leave roots smooth for styling. Styling options here are versatile. You could do braids or twist by applying more leave-in condish making the ends of you hair NOT the roots damp. You could also do a rod set, or bantu knots.
3. Lastly after washing and conditioning, you could style as usual and once its dry you could stretch it using a satin scrunchy.
Alright curly girlies, I hope this has been helpful to you. I was inspired to come up with my own Summer Hair Routine by Mrs.Curlynikki.
So what's the scoop? Will you try this routine or do you have one of your own?
Peace, love & hair grease

Length check in...mini chop review...

In my last post I mini chopped...yea me!
But why? How much did I cut? What's next?
All great questions that my viewers are asking so here are the answers..
The Background:
For new viewers thank you for your support and here is some background for you. For my loyal viewers, I will bring you up to speed as well.
My natural hair journey began with thoughts of getting deadlocks. I began to transition my hair and I am currently 14 months post relaxer..."whoooo-hooo". However in my decision to transition I began stalking the online natural hair community so for the 14 months I've been trying hairstyles, regimes and teetering back and forth on the verge of locking or not.

But while transitioning I would condition and deep condition but my relaxed ends tangle uncontrollably. Which is truly frustrating. So I decided to MC! I cut approximately 4 inches off. It feels great to have those useless inches off of my shoulders and my curl pattern is more defined because some of that weight is gone...and I couldn't be happier...the results are so great that I thought about BC...but I didn't! I'm not THAT brave! So now my hair is just below shoulder length and its a great length for the summer.
Thanks for following!

Look what I did...

I mini chopped!
It's summer, it's hot, its sticky and I was super frustrated. I am a swimmer, I love the water but everyday...my hair does NOT! Especially my permed ends. So, I cut them and it felt sooooo good. Now my ends are not so tangled, my curl print is more defined and I feel closer to my goal of being all natural, 4 inches closer...yeah me!
Love, peace and hair grease!

A possible new name for my brand..

"Know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. He is 'the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone.' Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

Surya Henna Brazil Cream *Product Review*

So there has been a lot of talk about Henna. The benefits it offers to natural hair, the fact that it is a conditioner, a hair dye and a healthy hair growing agent. Well this made me curious, even more so because of my natural-ness I haven't used hair dye in almost 8 months...I will admit that in the beginning of my Natural journey (10 months today) I couldn't give up my dye... I saw those gray hairs springing up and I decided that I would not perm/relax my hair but I certainly was not ready to have a hair full of grays... Well it left my hair soooo brittle that I haven't done it since.

That brings me to Henna. I have heard stories of how to mix it (with conditioner, cold water), how to wash it out (sink your head in a tub full of cold water) and all these other regiments. So I found this quaint little herbal store in Annapolis, Md called Sun and Earth (I will do a review on them at a later date) where they had Henna, for hair and it came in a mixable for and a cream form...well I like things easy, it was highly recommended by the store keeper and I decided to try it.

I am currently waiting to was it out so I will chat now about the application...
The directions are simple, and easy to read and understand. I was conserned about the smell and the size of the bottle because my transitioning hair consist of long, thick, afro like hair...but as soon as I began the application, I was so thankful that I didn't waste my money. I shook the bottle and heard liquid so I punched a hole in the top and proceeded. Then it wouldn't come out. So I opened the top to find that the dye is a thick cream with herbs in it. So I didn't have to worry about it dripping, or spilling because it was pretty thick. It is time for me to rinse out so expect a part two and three this week.
Pt. 2: styling after a Henna treatment
Pt. 3 Post treatment results...1. Even application 2. Immediate Benefits.
Peace and love y'all!

The Next Phase Of My Life

Just thinking...
There is a opportunity before me that could be the next phase of my life. But there are many questions that ly before me and this opportunity. Then theres fear...fear of the unknown, of failure or success and fear of the process...and thats real! So where do I go from here? Research, thinking, research and more thinking and then we will see what happens from there.
Prayers are always appreciated...as well as your comments.

My new wash day routine

The way to well managed hair is a great routine that include great staple products. When transitioning this is the only way to ensure less breakage, maximum growth and a great transition.
Tell us your story:
I am in my 8th month of transition and I have been adding staple products into my routine. However I have been suffering from a dry itchy irritated scalp for as long as I could remember. Going natural has definitely helped the situation however it has not stopped it completely. So here is my new way to attack and hopefully alleviate the problem.
The Prep:
*Detangle dry hair in small sections-my hair is best manipulated when dry. I have learned that the less I do when wet the less hair comes out.
*Gently scratch the scalp with a plastic comb to lift dandruff and to help stop itching-by wash day my head is itching like crazy.
*My prepoo treatment: Spray Seabreeze directly onto scalp wetting the hair as LESS as possible. Let marinate for 20-30minutes then rinse
*Poo #1: Use a "clarifying" shampoo-this will clear hair and scalp from any dandruff or debris like lint/build up of any kind. For me it takes 2 washes but you should wash, rinse then check your scalp in more than one "trouble" spots to be sure that there is nothing left behind. If you spot just one piece of debris them you need to wash again.
*Poo#2: Moisturizing shampoo-this poo will help restore the balance of oils, softness, and shine to your tresses. I use a moisturizing and detangling poo for this. (My recommend products are listed below) You can choose to was once or twice with this poo. Your hair should be softer and richer after you wash.
*Conditioner: If this is you week to deep condish then this would be the time to do so. A great way to repair damaged hair is to apply deep condish sit under dryer for 10 mins, apply another small amount without rinsing, back to the dryer for 10 mins and repeat one more time for a total of 30 mins under the dryer and 3 applications of condish. Tip: You can find some cheap conditioners on tje market today that would be great to use. However, deep condish is more costly. You could apply deep condish for the first application and some cheap condish for the other 2 times.
* If this is not deep condish day for you then apply a cheap condish let sit for10-20 mins with plastic cap and rinse then style. The end result is the picture below of my hair on day 4 of a Bantu Knot out still healthy looking and still NOT ITCHINg!!!
